In School
'Sign to Me' was created in partnership with schools and support services to produce a tool with the potential to be used as a very powerful educational resource. In schools this software has an unlimited potential. It can be used as a sign language tool with both Deaf and hearing students, or as a Deaf awareness package. Here are a few examples of how it can be used in school.
'Picture Dictionary' can be used with students who are weak readers or of pre-reading age. This gives them the opportunity to learn sign language independently without the struggle of having to read. Having the words written underneath each picture will help to build, develop, and reinforce their spelling and reading skills.
'Find a Sign' can be used as a resource by students who have been given written tasks to complete but find spelling difficult. By searching for part of a word they can then browse through the matches for the correct spelling, confirming their choice by viewing the video clip, picture, or example sentence. This can give a student who is usually heavily dependant on support the opportunity to work independently - A real confidence booster!
'Spelling Sheet' can be used by teachers as a tool to print weekly spelling lists. Having pictures present on the list will help to reinforce the spellings and will help the students retain the spellings while they are being learnt. This program can also be used by the students as a testing system whereby they type in their spellings and the picture will display if the spelling is correct (additional words can be added to this program). This program could also be used to print bingo sheets to play either standard bingo or BSL bingo.
'Flash Card Creator' can be used to print flash cards which can be used to create games, or can be laminated and stuck on objects and furniture to help with the development and reinforcement of spoken and read English.
